Amy Dockery Fields was born in Omaha, Nebraska. She was the oldest of five children and always wanted to be a teacher. She graduated from the University of Dallas with a degree in Theology and a minor in Education. Amy remained in Texas where she married her husband, Daniel Fields, and had two boys. Her journey teaching began at the high school level where she taught over 150 students each year. After leaving her high school teaching position to move, she was hired as an elementary school teacher. She discovered that she preferred teaching at the elementary level. This was because she felt that she was able to get to know her students and their families better. She was also able to identify and address her students’ needs earlier. Both Amy’s experience as a mother and her experience with parents and children give her insight into the needs of children. After she had homeschooled her children for three years, she returned to the traditional classroom. Amy compiled her 22 years of teaching experience and her work with over 800 families into this brief book. She published this book in hopes of helping parents and teachers recognize the needs of the children in their care. Safe, Unique, and Loved urges adults to create environments in which children are recognized and supported in such a way that they act as their best selves.
